- The CALM Clinic is a training clinic within the Department of Psychology that provides evidence-based psychological treatments
- CALM specializes in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with anxiety, traumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive related disorders.
- CALM has a dual mission to promote the well-being of clients while providing training to graduate students in clinical psychology in delivering evidence-based care.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
- CBT is a form of psychotherapy that teaches people to connect their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- CBT is the first line treatment for many disorders due to its rigorous empirical basis
What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder?
- BDD is characterized by appearance related concerns that may be not noticeable to others. It is coupled with behaviors or rituals such as mirror checking as a reponse to the anxiety from the appearance concern.
- BDD can begin as early as adolescence and can persist over a longer period of time if left untreated.
- BDD affects people of all ages, ethnicities, and genders. Women are slightly more likely to report symptoms than men.
- Some common appearance concerns can be related (but not limited to) to skin, hair, and nose.
What is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)?
- SAD has a 12.1% prevalence in the United States
- SAD is characterized by intense fear and anxiety from being perceived or judged by others coupled with avoidance from social interactions.
- Physical symptoms can include sweating, trembling, rapid heart rate, sick feeling in stomach
- Examples of social situations can include speaking with authority figures, public speaking, initiating a conversation with others, going to parties, etc.
